Competitor Backlink Analysis Workflow

Find, filter and qualify competitor backlinks to identify real opportunities for your client.

Example client: Dr. Rohit Bhandari → drrohitbhandari.com → first identify the right competitors, then analyse their backlink sources.
Core idea

Qualify first. Build second.

Not every competitor backlink is useful. We only move forward with links that are indexed, reputable, have real traffic and offer a realistic way to acquire them.

The complete process

Move a backlink forward only when it passes the required checks. The final list should contain realistic, usable backlink opportunities.

Find competitors→ Find backlinks→ Filter spam→ Check indexing→ Check reputation & traffic→ Check creation possibility→ Categorize→ Final backlink list
1

Find Competitors

Create the initial list of relevant individual doctors in the same specialty and market.

Example Search for doctors competing with drrohitbhandari.com. Use the competitor research prompt to create the first 40–50 candidate websites.
→
2

Find Their Backlinks

For each shortlisted competitor, collect backlink data from SEO tools.

Use Ubersuggest → Ahrefs → Semrush
Export backlink data into the working sheet.
→
3

Apply Filters

Remove obvious spammy, irrelevant and low-value backlink sources before deeper checking.

Filter out Spam/link farms → automated links → obvious low-value directories → bookmarking noise → irrelevant sources.
→
4

Check Indexing

Verify that the backlink source page is actually indexed before considering it a final opportunity.

Keep for the next check Indexed source page → live page → actual backlink can be verified.
5

Check Reputation & Real Traffic

Good DA or PA is not enough. Check whether the website has genuine reputation and real traffic.

Check Real organic traffic → relevant niche → active content → genuine website → not a spam/PBN-style site.
→
6

Check Backlink Creation

Find out whether we can actually create a backlink from this website.

Verify Free or paid? → registration? → submission form? → email? → Google login? → editorial approval? → opportunity active?
→
7

Identify Backlink Type

Once the source is confirmed as usable, classify what kind of backlink opportunity it provides.

Examples Guest Post → Directory Listing → Doctor Profile → Resource Page → Blog Mention → Editorial → Other.
→
8

Create the Final Backlink List

Add only the opportunities that passed the checks and can realistically be pursued.

Record Source URL → backlink type → category → traffic → free/paid → submission method → notes.
9

Start Outreach / Submission

Use the final database to begin the appropriate backlink acquisition process.

Track Registration → submission → email outreach → approval → live backlink.
→
10

Monitor the Final Links

Keep the database updated after links are created and check that the links remain live and indexed.

Track Live status → indexing → referring domain → traffic → notes / next action.
→

Final Backlink Opportunity

A backlink becomes part of the final list only after it passes the quality and creation checks.

Example examplehealth.com → indexed → real traffic → relevant reputation → accepts doctor listings → free registration → Doctor Directory → added to final backlink list.
DETAILED GUIDE

Want to go deeper?

Use these detailed steps when you need to understand exactly how each stage is researched, filtered and recorded.

1Find the Initial Competitor List+

Start by creating a broad list of individual doctors who could compete with the client in the same specialty and location.

For our example client, drrohitbhandari.com, use the competitor research prompt to find around 40–50 individual doctors.

Example Search for relevant individual doctors in the same specialty. The first list is only a candidate pool. Do not treat every doctor found as a confirmed SEO competitor.

Exclude hospital websites, Practo, Lybrate, generic directories, marketplaces, duplicate doctors and duplicate domains.

2Verify the Doctor & Website+

Before checking backlink data, verify that every candidate is a genuine individual doctor with a relevant standalone website.

  • Doctor actually practices the required specialty.
  • Website belongs to the individual doctor or doctor-led brand.
  • Website is working.
  • City is correctly associated with the doctor.
  • No duplicate doctor.
  • No duplicate domain.
Keep Dr. Example → Orthopaedics → example.com
Remove Example Hospital → examplehospital.com
3Check DA, PA & Total Backlinks+

Now check whether the candidate website has enough SEO strength and backlink activity to make it useful for competitor research.

Use available reliable SEO tools such as Ahrefs, Moz, Ubersuggest or Semrush. Check:

  • DA
  • PA / homepage authority
  • Total backlinks
Example example.com → DA 42 → PA 31 → 1,240 backlinks

Use the project's agreed screening threshold. A practical starting range can be DA 10–20+, but DA alone should not decide the competitor shortlist.

Never estimate or fabricate DA, PA or backlink numbers. If reliable data is unavailable, record that it needs verification.
4Finalize the Competitor Shortlist+

After verification and SEO metric screening, remove weak or irrelevant websites.

40–50 candidates→ Verified websites→ DA / PA / backlink screening→ Final competitors
Example 50 found → 42 verified → 24 pass the initial screening → 15–20 final competitors.

The final number can vary by niche. Do not keep a weak website just to reach a target number.

5Find Backlinks in SEO Tools+

For each qualified competitor, collect backlink data before doing additional Google discovery.

1. UbersuggestBacklink overview and export.
2. AhrefsBacklinks and referring domains.
3. SemrushBacklink Analytics and discovery.
Example competitor examplecompetitor.com → export its backlink data into the working sheet.

Keep the original export separately. Work on a cleaned copy so the raw data is always available.

6Use Google Search Operators+

Use Google Search Operators to find additional third-party mentions and possible backlink sources that may not be obvious in the tool export.

"DOCTOR NAME" -site:examplecompetitor.comFind external pages mentioning the doctor.
"Dr. DOCTOR NAME" -site:examplecompetitor.comFind pages using the doctor's name with Dr.
"DOCTOR NAME" "website" -site:examplecompetitor.comFind pages mentioning the doctor and website.
"DOCTOR NAME" "CITY" -site:examplecompetitor.comFind local mentions.
"BRAND NAME" "CITY" -site:examplecompetitor.comFind local brand mentions and listings.
A Google result is only a discovery lead. Open the page and verify that an actual backlink exists before adding it.
7Filter Spammy & Low-Value Links+

The competitor export can contain a large amount of noise. Filter it before manually researching every source.

  1. Filter by DA and Spam Score using the project's agreed thresholds.
  2. Remove obvious automated backlink and link-farm websites.
  3. Remove obvious low-value SEO directories and bookmarking sites.
  4. Separate generic social media and profile links.
  5. Separate PR and syndicated pages from genuine editorial opportunities.
  6. Keep relevant medical, local, professional and editorial sources for deeper checking.
A high DA or PA does not automatically make a backlink source useful. Quality and relevance still need to be checked.
8Check Indexing+

Before moving a source forward, check whether the actual backlink source page is indexed.

Check Source page → indexed → live → backlink can be verified.

Use an appropriate Google search check or URL inspection workflow where available. Treat search visibility as a verification signal, not as absolute proof of indexing.

The working rule for the final list is to onboard only sources that pass the required indexing check.
9Check Reputation & Real Traffic+

Even when DA and PA look good, inspect the website itself. We want genuine websites, not sites that only look strong through third-party metrics.

  • Is there real organic traffic?
  • Is the traffic relevant to the website's niche?
  • Does the site publish genuine content?
  • Does the website look active and legitimate?
  • Does it appear to be a spam or PBN-style network?
Example example.com → DA 45 → but almost no real traffic → investigate carefully before moving forward.

Only sources with acceptable reputation and genuine traffic should continue to the next stage.

10Check Whether We Can Create the Backlink+

Now find out whether the backlink opportunity is actually available to us.

  • Does the website accept new listings?
  • Is there a registration or onboarding option?
  • Is there a submission form?
  • Is email outreach required?
  • Is an official email required?
  • Is Google login required?
  • Is the opportunity free or paid?
  • Does the website require editorial approval?
Example examplehealth.com → Get Listed → Registration → Official email → Free → Approval required.
11Identify the Backlink Type & Category+

Once the source has passed the quality and creation checks, classify the opportunity so the final database is easy to use.

Guest PostContent contribution opportunity.
Directory ListingBusiness, doctor or local listing.
Doctor ProfileProfessional profile opportunity.
Resource PageRelevant resource or reference page.
Editorial MentionGenuine article or publication mention.
OtherSpecify the exact opportunity.

This is where the source becomes a clearly defined backlink opportunity rather than just a competitor backlink record.

12Add to the Final Backlink List+

Add only sources that have passed the complete process.

Indexed→ Reputable→ Real traffic→ Backlink possible→ Categorized→ Final backlink
Final record should include Source URL → competitor → backlink type → category → DA / PA → traffic → free / paid → submission method → email/login requirements → onboarding option → status → notes.
These are the final backlink opportunities we can hand over for outreach, registration or submission.

Final Outcome

A clean list of indexed, reputable, traffic-backed and realistically achievable backlink opportunities ready for the team.

Quality Rule

Do not keep a website only because its DA or PA is high. Reputation, indexing, real traffic and actual backlink creation options all matter.

Example Client: Dr. Rohit Bhandari → drrohitbhandari.com → use this workflow to move from competitor research to a qualified final backlink list.
