2.

Clean & Verify the Backlink Data

Clean the export so every row represents a usable backlink. For example, remove duplicate source URLs and keep the correct target URL for example.com.

CLEAN
Notes & steps
  1. Remove unnecessary columns.
  2. Keep the columns required for the audit.
  3. Remove duplicate backlink records.
  4. Open questionable URLs.
  5. Confirm the backlink exists on the source page.
  6. Mark broken, removed or unavailable links.
Recommended columns
ColumnWhat to record

Anchor TextText used for the backlink
Link TypeDoFollow / NoFollow
DA / PAAvailable third-party metrics
Backlink TypeBacklink category
Link StatusLive / Removed / Redirected / Broken
Index StatusIndexed / Not Found / Unable to Verify
3.

Check Backlink Status

Open the source page and confirm the link still works. For example, if a page mentioning example.com now returns 404, it is not a live backlink.

VERIFY
Notes & steps
  1. Open the source page.
  2. Find the client's backlink.
  3. Check the page and link.
  4. Record the current status.
LiveBacklink is present.
RemovedPage is live but the link is gone.
RedirectedSource URL redirects elsewhere.
BrokenPage is unavailable or fails to load.
4.

Check Indexing Status

Check whether the source page can be found in Google. A live page that mentions example.com is not automatically an indexed backlink.

INDEX
Notes & steps
  1. Check the source page using the method taught in the session.
  2. Record Indexed, Not Found or Unable to Verify.
  3. Keep the result tied to the audit date.
Note: A live backlink page is not automatically an indexed page. Indexing can change over time.
5.

Classify Backlinks

Group the backlinks by source type so you can see what has already been built for example.com, such as directories, profiles, editorial links, forums or Web 2.0.

CLASSIFY
Backlink categories
EditorialGuest post · Editorial mention · News / PR · Resource page
LocalBusiness listing · Local directory · Citation
ProfileProfessional profile · Social profile · Forum profile
CommunityForum · Blog comment · Q&A
ContentWeb 2.0 · Article submission
OtherSources that do not fit the above groups
What to look for

Look for categories that are heavily used, lightly used or missing. This shows the shape of the existing backlink profile.

6.

Analyse Anchor Text Distribution

Group anchors into branded, exact-match, partial-match, URL, generic and other types. For example, “Example Brand” is branded and “example.com” is a naked URL.

ANALYSE
Notes & steps
  1. Extract anchor text from the backlink sheet.
  2. Group similar anchors.
  3. Classify each group.
  4. Count each category.
  5. Calculate the percentage.
  6. Create a simple chart.
BrandedBrand or doctor name
Exact MatchTarget keyword
Partial MatchKeyword variation
Naked URLWebsite URL
GenericClick here, website, etc.
OtherMixed or unclear
Note: Use the distribution to understand the existing profile. Do not treat fixed percentages as a universal rule.
7.

Verify & Add Discovered Backlinks

Treat every Google result as a lead until you verify the page. For example, a page may mention Example Brand but contain no clickable link, so it should not be counted as a backlink.

VERIFY
What to search
  1. Client name and variations
  2. Brand mentions
  3. Website and domain variations
  4. Profile pages
  5. Directories and listings
  6. Articles and publications
  7. Other known backlink sources
Verification
  1. Find the result using the search operator.
  2. Open the page.
  3. Confirm that the backlink actually exists.
  4. Add only verified backlinks to the working sheet.
Note: A Google result is a lead for verification, not a confirmed backlink.
8.

Build the Final Backlink Database

Merge the tool exports and verified Google discoveries into one master sheet for example.com, then remove duplicate records.

FINALISE
Final cleanup
  1. Combine Ubersuggest and Google-discovered backlinks.
  2. Remove duplicates.
  3. Complete missing fields where possible.
  4. Check link and index status.
  5. Confirm backlink type and anchor text.
Final outputs
Master ListAll verified backlinks
Indexed ListPages appearing indexed
Unindexed ListPages not found in the index
DistributionTypes + anchor text
9.

Identify Gaps & Plan Next Backlinks

Use the final profile to spot missing backlink categories, anchor-text patterns and useful opportunities before building new links for example.com.

PLAN
Review the profile
  1. Which backlink categories are already heavily used?
  2. Which categories have little or no coverage?
  3. What does the anchor-text distribution show?
  4. Which relevant referring domains are already present?
  5. Which useful backlinks are unindexed?
  6. Where are the repeated patterns or clear gaps?
Next backlink plan

Use the findings to create the next backlink-building list. Prioritise relevant opportunities and avoid simply repeating the existing profile.

Audit first. Build next.

The final output is not just a backlink list. It is a clear view of what already exists and what needs to happen next.
